Covid and Health Anxiety

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

How much has Covid increased people’s health anxiety?

For those people who were already struggling with a medical condition, the fear of contracting Covid has pushed people over the edge and anxiety is high. The reports that Covid hits people with existing medical conditions even harder has people with diabetes, high blood pressure, lung issues, heart issues and weight problems fearing for their lives. It’s important for people with existing medical conditions to take all precautions necessary to stay safe. The fear is valid. But it’s important to not let the anxiety get the best of you. Of course there’s reason to be concerned. So the anxiety will be there. What we can do is minimize the impact that the anxiety has on you.

It’s important to stay in the present moment and not let your mind drift to “what if?” Remind yourself that you’re taking all precautions necessary. Remind yourself that in this moment you are safe and healthy. You may want to find good books to read or inspirational stories to shift your mood. You’ll want to reach out to friends so you don’t feel alone. You may want to journal or meditate. Exercise is always good to elevate a low mood and decrease anxiety. And breathing exercises are also a great practice to get into to lower anxious feelings. There are guided meditations specifically for health concerns and even for Covid stress.
